XartX aims to be more than just an Internet directory for finding Scottish Art, Scottish Artists and Scottish Galleries.  It aims to bring the personal approach to a presentation, where you can enjoy a moment to browse through and see what is available in Scottish Art today and a place to meet Scottish artists.  Scottish Art is perhaps elusive, as all art is after all art.  But, we think that Scottish Art derives from the artists of Scotland who live, feel and breathe the place, where the influence of the light, surroundings and people all impact upon their artistic output. Scottish light is ever changing and Scottish artists have described it in many ways: the sharp light of the east, clear light of the north, the true colour found in the west. A good example of Scottish light and its ever-changing effects can be found at the Firth of Tay.  Look down from Balgay Cemetery towards Perth and see the light responding to the changing angles of the sun from summer to winter and from morning to evening, playing on the river, which rises and falls in a changing pattern of tides throughout the year. This view is never static; the light is never the same and your appreciation of this and Scotland’s beauty changes your way of looking at life as a result.  This is what Scottish Art is all about and what so many Scottish artists try to convey in their artwork.
Our website is for Scottish Art and those interested in art generally and it is broken down into the following sections:
Any professional or semi-professional Scottish Artists can be listed on our site for free.  To be considered as a Scottish Artist, the artist must have been born in Scotland, or of Scottish parentage, or of a Scottish grandparent. Also included are non-Scottish nationals who are resident and working as artists in Scotland.  On occasion we do accept non-Scottish nationals, if they have studied and completed all of their training as an artist in Scotland and have become, for us, an honorary Scot and Scottish Artist.
We have tried to list all of the Scottish Art Galleries in their respective regions.  They present a very varied collection and cover every aspect of Scottish and International art.  It is something for Scotland to be proud of and a wonderful resource for Scottish Artists and Scottish Art.  This section is for commercial Scottish art galleries only.  The public Scottish Art Galleries and their programmes can be found in Exhibitions and Events.  You can also find calendars for the commercial Scottish art galleries in the Scottish exhibitions section.
There are so many Scottish artists winning awards and prizes around the world, that we have included this section.  It is a section that is growing to take account of the success of Scottish art.  If you are aware of a Scottish Art Prize or a prize-winning Scottish Artist we have not mentioned, please let us know and we will include it or them on our website.
There are three main sections for exhibitions: Scottish Public Art Gallery exhibitions, Scottish Commercial Art exhibitions and Scottish Art Festivals and Scottish Art Open Studios.
The Scottish Public Art Gallery exhibitions are broken down into regions and show a simple calendar of exhibitions, which may comprise Scottish artists, artists from elsewhere or a combination of artists, depending upon the theme the curator has chosen for the exhibition.
The Scottish Commercial Art exhibitions are also broken down into regions and show a simple calendar of exhibitions, which may feature Scottish artists, artists from elsewhere or a combination of artists, depending upon the theme the gallery has chosen to exhibit.  The calendars have links to these Scottish Art Galleries where you can see the detail of what they offer and, of course, check that the exhibition is as described by us.  We do our best to keep everything up to date but exhibitions and the Scottish Artists involved may change.  This is one of the most exciting places on our website and it shows the full richness of Scottish Art.
Scottish Art Festivals and Scottish Art Open Studios provide the true feel of the grassroots of Scottish Art and one of the few opportunities of meeting a Scottish Artist in the flesh!  A Scottish Artist opening their studio is a very rewarding experience for the visitor and a place where artists have the time to talk about their artwork and where a visitor can shop and commission new work as they wish.  So, if you are a Scottish artist and you are opening your studio, or are part of a festival, just let us know.
Scottish Art Events is a section for one-day art events; meet the artist, talks by artists or art curators, evening talks or art gallery or art studio tours.  This section also includes events and talks on international art, which are held in Scotland.  Whilst Scottish Art forms the basis for our website, it also has far-reaching international influence.  You can see from our section on Scottish Artists overseas that Scottish Art is being produced in every corner of the globe.  If you know of any Scottish Artist living and working overseas and you think that they may like to be listed, please let them know about us.
This section lists and links to Scottish Art Colleges and Universities currently providing a recognised qualification in art.  It also shows Scottish Artists who are giving tuition.  It lists Scottish Art Galleries and Scottish organisations that give tuition too.  Some Scottish artists, whilst teaching in Scotland, also arrange painting holidays overseas, others teach in the beautiful surroundings of, for example, French Chateaux. This section has been broken down into the Scottish regions to make it easier for you to find a Scottish artist near to you.  If you are a Scottish artist or know of someone who is giving art tuition in Scotland, please let them know about us as the listing is free.  There is a separate section for history of art courses in Scotland, where these can be readily found.
This section is for Scottish Art News, which aims to be of interest to Scottish Artists and those who have a general interest in Scottish Art.  We are a small band and so welcome your assistance in keeping this section up to date.
There are free Scottish Art magazines available too.  These feature Scottish Artists who live and work at home and abroad and are issued quarterly, with Special Issues coming out throughout the year.  The Special Issue Visual Art Magazines, which aim to reflect the individual Scottish Artist or Scottish art organisation’s voice, are themed to give an interesting slant.  You will be able to download our Scottish Art magazines from the Back Issues Page and the current Quarterly Magazine by subscribing (free) to them.  We always have several of the Special Issue Scottish Art Magazines in progress, but as we are working with professional artists who are extremely busy, we let them take their natural course and issue them when they are ready.
Scottish Art Societies, Agents, Scottish Galleries, Award Bodies and other organisations can use our inset pages to advertise their exhibitions or Awards free of charge.  We do not currently do this for individual and unaffiliated Scottish artists, but may be able to do so in the future.
If there is anything you wish to know about Scottish Art, Scottish Artists, Scottish Galleries, Scottish Exhibitions, Awards & Prizes, Scottish Art Tuition and Scottish Art News, you should be able to find it here.  If you can’t, please let us know through our contact page and we will try to remedy this.
Finally, if you would like to find out about us, or the website’s founder, please go to our “About Us” page where you will find links to some examples of his work.
